Insurance Coverage
Turo offers several protection plans. Your choice directly impacts your net earnings per trip.
- Minimal: Lower host fee, higher guest deductible — best for low-risk vehicles.
- Standard: Balanced between cost and coverage.
- Premier: Highest protection but largest fee cut into earnings.
- Commercial: For hosts with commercial insurance — lowest Turo fee.
The calculator uses the Turo fee percentage associated with your plan to estimate net revenue.
Utilization Rate
Utilization is the percentage of available days your car is actually rented. Industry benchmarks:
- 15–25%: Part-time / passive host
- 30–50%: Active host, good pricing
- 60–80%: Power host / fleet operator
A higher utilization rate improves every financial metric. Pricing strategy, vehicle popularity, and market demand all affect this number.
Profit Margin
Net profit margin = net annual profit / gross annual revenue. This tells you how many cents on every dollar you actually keep.
- > 30%: Strong — well-optimized listing
- 15–30%: Average — room to improve
- < 15%: Weak — costs likely too high relative to pricing
Break-Even Point
The number of months it takes for cumulative net profit to equal your initial investment (down payment + fees + first-month costs).
A shorter break-even means faster recovery of capital. Aim for under 12 months for a solid investment.
Annual Return
Net annual profit as a percentage of your total initial investment. Compares your Turo earnings to what you could earn from passive investments.
- > 20%: Excellent return
- 10–20%: Good
- < 10%: Consider whether the effort is worth it
