Calculate material cost for 3D prints by filament weight or cost
Checks that the spool cost, spool weight, and amount fields contain valid positive numbers. Empty or non-numeric values trigger a FAIL state.
Validates the filament weight falls within a practical range: 1 g to 10,000 g (10 kg). Values outside this range are flagged as warnings since they may indicate typos.
Verifies the spool cost is between $0.50 and $200. Most consumer and prosumer filaments fall in this range. Unusually high or low costs get a warning.
Indicates whether a valid conversion result is currently displayed. Green means the output values are computed and trustworthy.
When a material is selected, the density is used to convert between weight and volume. Each material has a known density in g/cm³ that affects volume-based calculations.
| Material | Typical Spool | Approx. $/kg |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | 1 kg | $18 – $30 |
| ABS | 1 kg | $18 – $30 |
| PETG | 1 kg | $20 – $35 |
| TPU | 1 kg | $30 – $55 |
| Nylon | 1 kg | $35 – $60 |
| PLA-CF | 1 kg | $35 – $55 |
